I did an illustration for enRoute's website a little while ago and this was made accidentally from a scanned page of pencil scratches that I used somewhere along the line for texture. I don't even remember why I wanted the negative, but I sort of like how it looks. Makes me think of cold, cold, clear winter nights in Winnipeg.

I had a couple hours to kill after a meeting uptown yesterday, so I headed to the Met. With the McQueen show closed, it was pleasantly calm; plenty of elbow room and opportunity to hang out and wander around. I decided to explore less familiar galleries. In the Arts of Oceania section I saw a "dance wand" that looked like a very elaborately dressed, very worried-looking wooden spoon.

Little House

As much as I loved The Art Barge, and the D'Amico's home and studio, what I went really nuts over (which means suddenly forgetting to breath, and thinking "whaaaaaaaat?!") was the couple's guest cottage, the Little House. It's so lived-in, so cozy (this will never be a bad word for me) and comfortable and interesting, so happy and so personal, that I can't imagine it was actually reserved for visitors. Or if it was, they must have felt they'd arrived somewhere as familiar as their own home.

I just moved into a new apartment, and while I felt an impulse to whittle and purge, cut my stuff by half, live in a space with white walls and bare floors, just a bed, a chair, a lamp and a some books, looking at these pictures again reminded me that I'm really a Little House kind of person.

Mabel & Victor D'Amico Studio and Archive

After our tour of the Art Barge, we hopped back on the bus for a short ride to Victor and his wife Mabel D'Amico's home and studio, a sunny mid-century cottage on the beach. It's clear that Mabel was a creative force in her own right. She died in 1998 (just over a decade after Victor) and the house is just as she left it, a perfect midpoint between the amazing Eames and "Elephant" houses. Almost every surface shows off a collection or assemblage, from the window sills (colored bottles and driftwood sculptures) and the doorposts (geometric bits of wood and architectural molding) to the walls (ceramic cats and homemade masks). I have a new appreciation for pegboard. If it hadn't been for the three-hour drive back to Manhattan, I could have spent the whole day rummaging around this place. Luckily, I had just enough time, as some of the others milled around the bus, slapping at mosquitos, to duck into the tiny house hiding in the brush next door...

Victor D'Amico Institute of Art/The Art Barge

Last week I got to join a busload of MoMA staff for a daytrip to the Victor D'Amico Institute of Art. The Art Barge, as it's affectionately called, was founded in 1960 by Victor D'Amico, MoMA's first Director of Education and a guy who believed in the value of playfulness and hands-on engagement in art education. A curatorial assistant and I were partly there to look at some of the "motivational toys" D'Amico developed as part of his Children's Art Carnival, a program that ran at MoMA from 1942 to 1969 (there's a great article about the Carnival on the museum's website, here.)

True to its nickname, the Institute's housed in a WWI navy barge, beached in the Hamptons. The two and a half hours we got at the Barge was more than well worth the six hours spent on the bus (even without Mad Libs). The place is amazing! Not to mention the D'Amico's home/archive and guest cottage (crazy amazing!), which I'll tell you about soon. The Institute's director fed us lunch, gave us a great tour of the Barge (from which I snuck away for a bit to take some pictures), and explained D'Amico's ideas and methods. I like knowing that MoMA, whose history can seem so stately and imposing, had this scrappy, rough, and disordered (in the best possible way) side.

Color Moves: Art and Fashion by Sonia Delaunay

I was really lucky to be asked to assist curator Susan Brown on the Sonia Delaunay exhibition at the Cooper-Hewitt (10 years in French Immersion paid off). I've liked Sonia's work for a while, but I didn't have any idea how prolific she was. The show includes everything from paintings and costume designs to over thirty years-worth of textiles. The prints are insanely beautiful! Even working with tiny thumbnails made me gasp, so you can imagine how it felt to finally see the stuff in person, not to mention install it. I learned how to 'tjuz', which I'm sure will be a valuable life skill.

Radical Shifts

The last few weeks have been little nuts, but in a good kind of way! I took an intensive course at school; submitted my thesis proposal; started organizing a symposium; assisted on a show that opened at the Cooper-Hewitt; and mounted an exhibition, Radical Shifts, that I'd been planning since last summer. I had a really good time working with my co-curator, Danielle Epstein, and the staff of the Kellen Design Archives at Parsons, and it was so satisfying to see research develop into something more physical, immediate and visual than an essay. I can't wait to do it again!

Sometimes I wish I'd never heard of the internet. Other times I come across such happy surprises that I want to share them right away, even if it means a temporary neglect of schoolwork.

I just found out that one of my all-time favourite illustrators, Laura Carlin, started a blog. And she's posting the most amazing new work: ceramic figures, bowls, tiles and urns in her amazing sketchy and charming, but really sophisticated style.

I've been working on an exhibition that's opening at the Cooper-Hewitt on March 18, Color: Moves: Art and Fashion by Sonia Delaunay. Seeing the material in person the last couple weeks has been super exciting, but I also discovered some amazing stuff during research for the show. The Cooper-Hewitt has a design library with the most fantastic and beautiful rare books, including Tapis et Tissus. Published in 1929, the book has a foreword by Sonia Delaunay, and features a couple of her textile designs, and designs chosen by her, including some from the Bauhaus weaving workshop (Anni Albers!). The patterns are incredible, and sometimes so contemporary looking it's crazy!

When I started grad school I resolved to be more involved than I had been as an undergraduate. I meant speaking in class, getting to know my professors, joining stuff; generally being a keener (do Americans say 'keener'?). It was a really good policy and it's led to some good things!

A few classmates and I resurrected our program's student assembly in the fall, and while it's added another commitment to an edging on out-of-control school year, it's been fun. And, for me, a legitimate excuse for some (very) amateur graphic design. Here are a couple of the invitations I made for parties we hosted at the museum.

P.S. Since they were program-only things, I didn't think there was any problem using images I found on the internet.

I learned about Esta Nesbitt (1918 - 1975) while I was collecting material for an exhibition I'm co-curating. She was better known as an artist (her prints and mixed-media works are in the collection of the Brooklyn Museum) but I was really excited to see her fashion illustrations from the mid-'60s. Her style - especially in her paintings - can be languid and appealing, but sometimes graphic; occasionally on its way to reminding me of Rene Gruau.

Nesbitt was published in Mademoiselle, Harper's Bazaar and the New York Times, but you can see her original illustrations, rough drawings and stacks of tear sheets at the Anna-Maria and Stephen Kellen Archives, Parsons' amazing collection of student work and documents from over nine decades.

Not to mention too little time with missed friends and family.

I passed by Unnameable Books in Prospect Heights a couple weeks ago, and saw this amazing book winking at me from the window. I love the kid's attitude (such a sassy stance, below!), that he lives in a brownstone, that his cats are named Cat and Cat-Cat, and that his relationship to the Big Man is completely undefined.

Here're some quick sketches of a few of the pieces on display at the Met as part of the Costume Institute's 'American Woman' exhibition. The show's concise and well-edited, the display is fantastic, and some of the clothes are amazing! All silhouette and texture and draping. I'm sitting here in cutoffs sort of wishing that people dressed up a little more like they used to.

One of the privileges of my grad program is getting to work closely with the staff at the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum, one of only two Smithsonian museums in New York. Over a school year I got to do some pretty neat things, like assist with public programs (this one's great and I think my hair has a brief cameo) and work with the curators on upcoming shows (Sonia Delaunay, spring 2011!). I've also been lucky to do pretty crazy unofficial things, too, that felt like one version of fantasy New York, like attend the Rodarte opening (I asked Laura Mulleavy if all the smiling made her cheeks hurt like a kid at their bar mitzvah).

For a class last semester, students in my program worked with the second year students in the SVA's MFA Design Criticism program to examine the issues surrounding the Design Triennial, which is up now at the Cooper-Hewitt. We wrote a series of blog posts, which will be on the museum's website for the run of the show. Mine went up today! Please take a look and, if you're in the city, stop by the museum. There're some really fantastic projects!

It's been really hot here. The kind of temperatures for which the only sensible thing to do is lie spread-eagle and motionless. In Toronto, where our unshaded house trapped the day's heat like an oven, I'd wake up in the morning feeling cooked to the bone. I started falling asleep with one arm hanging outside the window to catch a breeze. In New York, when I can, I go to the beach.

Happy tenth birthday, Jaiden!

Today, Jaiden (most fantastic kid; daughter of most wonderful couple, Dani and Stefano; keeper of most beautiful flower shop, Jaiden's Petals; and owner of most loyal dog, Abbie) turns 10! Jaiden's funny, talented, intelligent, impossibly creative, and absolutely unique. She's also much cooler than I can ever hope to be: she's been wearing skulls since I met her, started a comic book club at 8, joined a band at 9. I don't know what she could possibly cram into the next ten years, but it can only be amazing.

I started working on a little print for Jaiden's birthday. Here are my thumbnail and a rough of the illustration. I'll finish up, print this and pop it in the mail ASAP!

I love illustration and I'm a bit of a magpie for interesting paper bits - letterhead, menus, discarded notes, business cards, envelopes, invitations, sugar packets, etc - so when I met someone who works in an archive that would be full of of the stuff, I asked if I could drop by for a visit. It was like some sort of flea market dream! I didn't get to rifle through so much as ask my friend to carefully show me this and that while I sat on my hands trying not to be grabby.

Sorry these're fuzzy. I didn't use a flash, and the room was a little dim. But just imagine boxes and boxes full of 80 years' worth of beautifully illustrated and designed print material. I wanted to slip something in my pocket when my host wasn't looking. I refrained from thievery, but it was hard.

The other night I went to the New York premiere of 'Tiny Furniture', a fantastic film by 23-year-old director Lena Dunham. It was her second feature film (what am I doing with my time?). It also happened to be part of IFC's Rooftop Films series, my new favourite thing. Bring a friend and a blanket.

I learned in one weekend that summer in Brooklyn is mostly spent on the roof. Picnics, movies. Weddings, even.

On Saturday, my friends J & M were married on their apartment rooftop in Fort Greene. J's family came from all over America. His old dog, Cosmo, ambled up between the couple as they said their vows. M's family had flown in from Japan. Her parents wore kimonos, and her father sang a traditional Japanese wedding song. It was an amazing moment.

A friend tried to teach me a breakdancing move a little while ago. You're supposed to sort of twist your whole body over in a smooth motion. I think it must look pretty neat when it's done well. This is about as far as I got.

My chair collection is growing. I rescued this grey Eames from a trash pile behind an apartment block I pass on my way to the subway. It took weeks of staking out - I peeked to make sure it was still there literally every morning for two months - and a fortuitous meeting with the Super on an already lucky day.

As much as I love that I'm required to take a class on 20th-century design, it's hard to sit in a dark lecture room while the weather's so lovely outside. So I was getting a little antsy those last few weeks at school, and the doodles, which had been politely hanging out in the margins for most of the semester, started to take over my notebook. At first it was just thumbnails of the slides - lots of mini floating chairs and tiny, grumpy architects - and then everyone around me. So these are a few of my friends paying attention in class when I wasn't.

I’ve been doing some research at the New York Public Library for a professor. Tracking down centuries-old newspapers, letters by American Revolutionary War heroes and articles about occult-sounding medical treatments has me feeling a little like Indiana Jones. Or some intrepid woman anthropologist…It doesn’t hurt that the building is incredible, with its maze of rooms filled with masses and masses of cloth-bound books, its spiral staircases leading to narrow balconies and cat-walks, its huge reading rooms with coffered ceilings that make you feel impossibly tiny but somehow cozy. Also, the place is guarded by two lions.

I ate a quick lunch on the steps, and drew even quicker sketches. One of them's looking a little more like a collie than a lion...

I took a really short, really fantastic trip to Texas a couple weeks ago with the idea to cram as much western stuff as possible into three and a half days. My friend Alessandra was more than obliging! I went to the rodeo, two-stepped with real cowboys, ate barbecue and crawfish, got an awful sunburn at the beach (not so good) and picked up a couple expressions ("he's all hat and no cattle!"). I've also said "y'all" more than once since returning to New York. So efficient!

Tonight I flipped through a notebook I'd finished just before the trip, and the margins were full of cowboys (and cowgirls). So school got thrown by the wayside for a minute (a couple hours) for some photoshop drawing. There should be more to come. Mutton busting is way too crazy a thing to not draw...

I was leafing through a book on Ludwig Bemelmans when I noticed this little picture in the corner of a page.

I love how images can conjure up really specific associations. To me, this one's about the '50s, calisthenics, old school gyms with hardwood floors and benches, medicine balls. Maybe the Ballet Russe warming up. Or a demonstration of rythmic gymnastics. And something I heard on NPR the other day, a rarely performed Prokofiev piece called Music for Athletic Exercises.

I didn't know when I drew those that she's actually the famous Parisian stripteaseuse, Dodo D'Hambourg. Here's Bemelmans' take.

I was in Montreal for a few days last week. Most of it was family time, but my one must-visit was the Canadian Centre for Architecture. While it felt a little like I'd caught the CCA between more substantial exhibitions, I was really excited by a few of the things I saw. Small, inspiring surprises remind me why I like the things I do, and why I'm studying what I'm studying. I spent an hour and a half jotting down names and titles, making little sketches and taking pictures with my brother's iPhone.

One of my favourite discoveries was a 1966 NFB film, 'Rouli-Roulant'. Filmmaker Claude Jutra explains the rouli-roulant (skateboard) and follows a gang of young skaters in Montreal's Westmount neighbourhood. Besides the graphic look of the film, the melodramatic narration and the music, I really like the film because the kids embody (for me) a perfect aesthetic mash-up of skate culture and French New Wave. Or Nouvelle France Nouvelle Vague, in this case. I love the aloofness of the kid skating with his hands shoved in his car coat, and the cool nonchalance of the girl in the striped shirt. The skinny pants, the desert boots and the haircuts. Take a look.

I've been at the Met a bunch lately (which is honestly a pretty crazy thing for me to say casually) researching Renaissance objects for school. Renaissance decorative objects aren't really my thing, so when I'm done I've been wandering around looking for things to draw.
There was a guy planted in front of this nymph sculpture, above, finishing a perfect, painstakingly-rendered charcoal drawing. He had a crowd of kids around him, peeking over his shoulder, and dads would chat him up every once in a while. Mine has a blushy bum, so that's alright.

Here's another card, this one for my friend Charlene while she finished her MA in History and Culture of Fashion in London. For her thesis (which I'll read and return to you any day now, Charlene! For reals!) she wrote about Asian North American girl nerds, so the front is a bit like a library catalog or sign-out card. We decided to leave a space at the bottom for her to write in her phone number, since it'd change when she returned to Toronto. The little hand-written element also fit the theme well enough.

Charlene asked for some nice horn-rimmed glasses for the reverse.

American photographer Helen Levitt died last Sunday at age 95.
I was surprised how this affected me, considering I've only been familiar with her work for a couple years, let alone had a more palpable connection. It feels like the end of an era, like the last of those kids she photographed has grown up.
As a small tribute, here's my mom at age 4.
